The recent tensions in the Middle East seem to have sent gas prices skyrocketing. Well, it looks like there’s not much we can do to bring gas prices down, but as Nissan Rogue owners, we can save a little money as gas prices keep rising.

Fortunately, the Nissan Rogue is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its class, achieving over 32 mpg combined, an impressive figure for a non-hybrid SUV. You can even save even more gas by activating Eco Mode.

Eco mode is one of several driving modes available on the Nissan Rogue. This mode is available on all trim levels, whether front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

In this article, I’ll explain how Eco mode works and when it’s best to use it, and we’ll also find out: does it actually save money, or does it just make the car slower?

How it Works

When Eco Mode is activated, the Nissan Rogue’s computer adjusts several vehicle functions to help improve fuel efficiency. Eco Mode makes the engine run more smoothly, and the accelerator pedal feels slightly less responsive, resulting in a more gradual acceleration.

In this mode, the transmission is also adjusted to shift gears earlier, which helps keep engine RPMs low. Gear shifts also feel smoother and more relaxed.

The air conditioning and heating functions are also adjusted. The cooling system operates more gently, helping keep the engine at low RPMs to minimize fuel consumption.

The Newer Nissan Rogue is equipped with a 1.5L VC-turbo engine, making the eco mode on the Nissan Rogue more sensible, not just a marketing gimmick.

If we look at how the variable compression system works, we can see that fuel efficiency is one of its key benefits.

Nissan Rogue features a Variable Compression engine that can switch compression ratios as needed.

Under heavy load, the system instructs the engine to operate at low compression, resulting in high power output; conversely, compression can be increased up to 14:1 when the system detects that the vehicle doesn’t require much power.

Eco mode optimizes this system by prioritizing higher compression ratios ( up to 14:1) for as long as possible to maximize thermal efficiency. This is why the car feels slightly less punchy in Eco mode; the system is actively delaying the shift to low compression to keep fuel consumption at a minimum.

When to Use (and When to Avoid) ECO Mode

When Eco mode is activated, the vehicle’s main priority is to save fuel. As we discussed earlier, this efficiency is achieved by reducing engine power and some other vehicle functions.

You should use Eco mode if your driving conditions allow it. Eco Mode is best suited for:

Highway cruising

Flat roads,

Stop-and-go city traffic.

However, since engine power is reduced in Eco mode, you should avoid using this mode in certain situations, including:

Merging onto fast highways

Towing

Driving on steep uphill mountain passes

So, when you need all the power your SUV has to offer. For example, when overtaking another vehicle on the highway, you should turn off Eco mode. In this situation, you should use one of the other Nissan Rogue driving modes.

Real-World Expectations

So, does Eco Mode really save money? Or does it just make the car slower?

Well, Eco Mode isn’t a magic button that can boost your car’s fuel economy from 30 mpg to 50 mpg. It only makes a slight difference.

Eco Mode does actually make a difference. I’ve noticed savings of about 2 or 3 mpg when I turn on Eco Mode for long drives. The difference is small, but it’s significant.

In an article published by consumerreports.org a few months ago, Jeff S. Bartlett conducted tests to find out if Eco Mode really saves gas; they concluded that Eco Mode improves fuel economy by about 2–3 mpg compared to an erratic driving style.

To be honest, eco mode won’t give you the best results if your driving style isn’t “eco-friendly.” Drive normally, press the gas pedal gently, try not to accelerate too frequently, and maintain a constant speed; that way, I’m sure you’ll see an improvement in fuel economy.

Some people think that you can save fuel simply by adjusting your driving style, even without Eco Mode. Well, that’s not entirely wrong; in fact, Eco Mode helps make it easier to adjust your driving style.

Simply switch to Normal Mode or another available mode. On newer Nissan Rogues, turn the selector knob to select another mode. On older Rogues, press the Eco Mode button again to return to Normal Mode.

Verdict

Eco mode is a feature built into the Nissan Rogue for several years now. It gives drivers the option to save a little fuel.

Eco mode has become more efficient with the introduction of the 1.5L variable-compression turbo engine; this engine operates with variable compression, which affects fuel consumption.

Eco Mode has proven to help drivers save a little gas, but it also comes with consequences—that’s why you need to understand its characteristics. You can refer to the chart below for a clearer understanding.

The modern Nissan Rogue is equipped with a drive mode system that can be selected based on road conditions.

Depending on the Rogue model you drive, you’ll have several driving modes to choose from.

All models come equipped with Auto, Eco, and Sport modes.

Other models include special modes such as Off-road mode and Snow mode.

Availability & How to Use

Depending on whether you have a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive model, the driving modes available may differ significantly.

FWD Models Equipped with 3 essential modes (Standard/Auto, Eco, and Sport))

AWD Models: Equipped with 5 specialized modes (Standard/Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Off-Road)

Switching driving modes on these two models differs slightly. The front-wheel-drive model uses a “D-MODE” button to change modes, while the AWD model features a rotary knob.

Both are positioned on the center console for easy access while driving. You can easily switch driving modes even while driving without having to stop the car first.

Drive Mode Selector on Rogue FWD Vs AWD

To change driving modes, just turn the knob (AWD) or press the “D-MODE” button (FWD); the selected mode will appear on the instrument cluster display (speedometer).

Okay, after this, we’ll go over each of the driving modes.

The Standard Three

Auto

This is a “set it and forget it” driving mode for most people. On AWD models, this mode is indicated by a highway symbol with a broken white center line.

When in this setting, the Rogue’s computer balances fuel economy and performance. On AWD models, the system intelligently distributes power to the front and rear wheels only when slippage is detected.

This Auto/Normal driving mode is ideal for everyday driving, providing ample power while delivering good fuel economy.

Eco Mode

Eco mode is indicated by a “leaf icon” on the selector. This mode is ideal if you’re trying to save as much fuel as possible.

Eco mode is suitable for city commuting or long highway drives. However, when Eco mode is activated, the car will feel a bit sluggish, and the gas pedal won’t be as responsive. This is intentional to prevent sudden, fuel-consuming revs.

If you’d like to learn more about Eco Mode, please check out Nissan Rogue Eco Mode for a detailed and comprehensive explanation.

Sport Mode

Sport Mode is marked by a checkered flag icon on the selector knob. When activated, the Rogue’s computer makes the engine operate more aggressively, sharpening throttle response and holding gears longer to keep the engine in its peak power range.

You’ll notice a significant change in acceleration in Sport Mode; it gives the car a more agile feel, making it ideal for overtaking other vehicles.

Sport Mode is the opposite of Eco Mode, delivering strong power but using more fuel.

The AWD Exclusives

If you’re driving a Rogue with all-wheel drive, there are two additional driving modes to choose from.

Snow Mode

Just like the name suggests, the snow mode is designed for winter driving. In winter, roads are often icy and slippery.

Snow Mode smooths the car’s acceleration by reducing initial torque to the wheels, helping prevent slipping on icy surfaces.

Off-Road Mode

This mode is designed for those who love adventure. It optimizes engine torque and transmission to maintain momentum on uneven terrain.

It’s ideal for driving in low-traction conditions such as dirt roads, sand, mud, gravel, etc.

When this mode is active, the computer will direct the vehicle to transfer power from slipping wheels to those with traction. This is an advanced traction control system.

Which Mode Should You Use?

If you drive a Rogue AWD, congratulations, you have five driving modes to choose from, which you can adjust to suit your driving conditions.

I’d recommend using Auto mode for most situations; it’s the best balance between performance and fuel efficiency.

However, when your driving conditions change, I suggest switching driving modes.

In winter and on slippery roads, choose Snow mode. When driving on dirt roads, Off-Road mode is a great option.

Eco mode is also quite helpful for saving even more fuel; you can select this mode when you’re running low on fuel and want to conserve as much as possible to make it to the next gas station.

If you’re driving a Rogue with FWD, don’t worry—the Auto, Sport, and Eco driving modes are more than sufficient and can accommodate your daily driving needs.

In fact, 10 years ago, most vehicles didn’t have special driving modes, and we were just fine. But with these special modes, they certainly help drivers even more.

Quick Summary Table

Drive Mode

FWD Available?

AWD Available?

Best Used For…

Standard

Yes

Yes

Everyday driving

Eco

Yes

Yes

Saving gas / Heavy traffic

Sport

Yes

Yes

Overtaking / Spirited driving

Snow

No

Yes

Icy or slippery roads

Off-road

No

Yes

Gravel, dirt, or light trails

If you are shopping for a Nissan Rogue, you may be curious about its panoramic sunroof feature. If you have seen it before, you will agree with me that it is quite nice.

The presence of a sunroof or moonroof feature will make the cabin atmosphere very different from cars without this feature.

A sunroof provides a glimpse of the heavens, flooding the interior with sunlight and instantly making the car feel roomier. It elevates the overall experience inside and adds a dash of style to the Nissan Rogue’s appealing design.

This article will explore all aspects of the Nissan Rogue’s sunroof/moonroof. I’ll clarify the distinctions between the two, weigh their pros and cons, and explain their availability in the Rogue.

Alright, let’s get started!

Sunroof Vs. Moonroof

You may be confused. Some people say it’s a sunroof, some say it’s a moonroof, so what’s the difference between the two?

Well, to make it clearer, let’s discuss this first.

A sunroof, in essence, is a car roof feature designed to admit both light and fresh air into the interior.

Traditionally, in older vehicles, these sunroofs were constructed from metal panels. These panels could be opened by physically lifting them out of the car’s structure.

In newer cars, sunroofs are usually made of slightly frosted glass.

Meanwhile, a moonroof is actually similar to a sunroof, except that it opens inward rather than outward, and is usually made of tinted glass.

Usually, you need to open the sunroof if you want to let air or light into the cabin, just like opening a window in a house, while a moonroof is like a skylight roof, allowing you to let light in without letting outside air into the cabin.

So, which one does the Nissan Rogue have?

The Nissan Rogue has a panoramic moonroof. What is that? In short, it’s a moonroof, but much larger than a regular moonroof.

Its size is almost as large as the car’s roof, so it allows light to freely enter the cabin, making the Nissan Rogue’s cabin feel very spacious and airy, with a truly enjoyable view of the sky from inside.

Cost and Availability

If you are interested in purchasing a Nissan Rogue with a Panoramic Moonroof, you will want to know which models are equipped with it.

For the 2026 model year, the panoramic moonroof is only available on the Dark Armor and Platinum trim levels. It’s also available on the all-new Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid Platinum model.

The Nissan Rogue Dark Armor might be the most affordable option for a model with a panoramic moonroof; it starts at $33,340, excluding handling and destination fees. For pricing and specifications of other Nissan Rogue 2026 trim levels, please see our 2026 Nissan Rogue Trims.

Meanwhile, the Rogue Platinum, starting at $39,390, is the most well-equipped option if budget isn’t an issue for you. In addition to a panoramic moonroof, it comes fully loaded with exclusive features such as built-in Google and wireless Apple CarPlay.

Pros and Cons

The presence of a moonroof will definitely elevate the interior appearance of an SUV, but it does come with consequences.

A moonroof or sunroof has unavoidable pros and cons, as follows.

Pros of a Panoramic Moonroof

Stylish: It cannot be denied that a panoramic sunroof or moonroof extending from the windshield to the back looks really stylish. From the outside, a shiny roof with a dark tint can make the car look cleaner and more athletic.

Enhances the driving experience: Driving with a brighter cabin and a beautiful view of the sky can certainly improve your mood. In most situations, this clearly makes driving more enjoyable.

Higher resale value: The presence of a panoramic sunroof or moonroof can increase the resale value compared to models without one. You can check this yourself on the marketplace.

Cons of a Panoramic Moonroof

Additional cost: As we all know, to add a panoramic sunroof or moonroof, we have to pay more than for a model without one.

Requires more maintenance: Glass components on moonroofs/sunroofs require regular maintenance and cleaning to remain durable and leak-free.

Reduces headroom: A sunroof or moonroof that is thicker than a regular car roof will certainly reduce headroom—a trade-off.

Potential for leaks/breakages: Glass can break more easily than solid metal roof panels when something hits or falls on it. In addition, the seal around the edges of the glass can wear out and become brittle over time, which can lead to leaks.

(dubizzle)

Is It Worth It?

Deciding whether a panoramic roof is worth adding to a Nissan Rogue can be tricky. A sunroof offers a great view but also has drawbacks and can be quite expensive.

To help you decide if a sunroof is worth it, consider the following points:

Do you plan to use a roof rack? If so, the rack will obstruct the view, making the sunroof seem unnecessary.

Will you actually use the sunroof? Some people prefer dimmer light inside the cabin for a calmer atmosphere.

Do you live in a hot climate? In such areas, a sunroof is rarely used because the sun is too intense. I live in a hot place like Florida, and opening the sunroof during the day makes the cabin extremely hot—it’s uncomfortable.

Summary

The Nissan Rogue’s panoramic sunroof/moonroof is an impressive feature, and you should definitely consider it when buying a Rogue.

If you’re eyeing wireless Apple CarPlay for your next ride, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most sought-after features in cars today.

Thinking about getting a Nissan Rogue? Then you’re probably wondering: does it offer wireless Apple CarPlay, which models have it, and how can you get it?

In this article, I’ll walk you through how to get this feature in a Nissan Rogue, and what to do if your Rogue didn’t come with it from the factory.

What is Apple Carplay

Apple CarPlay lets you bring key functions from your iPhone right onto your car’s multimedia screen. Since 2015, Apple has built this feature into many vehicles to make driving more connected and convenient.

Once your iPhone is hooked up to CarPlay, you can use it hands-free for:

Phone calls

Maps

Messages

Music

Podcasts

Audiobooks

Calendar

Third-party apps are supported, too. For example, you can stream music through Spotify directly from your dashboard, no need to touch your phone.

Originally, CarPlay required a cable. You had to plug your iPhone into the car using a Lightning-to-USB cable. But thanks to tech upgrades, many cars now offer wireless Apple CarPlay, so you can connect without any cords.

Wireless CarPlay is a game-changer. It cuts down on distractions, keeps your interior tidy, and makes everything more convenient.

No more fumbling with cables just to use navigation or stream your favorite playlist. With wireless CarPlay, everything’s ready the moment you start the car.

If you’re like me and love a clean interior without messy cords, wireless Apple CarPlay is a must-have.

When Did Wireless CarPlay Come to the Rogue?

Wireless Apple CarPlay became standard on the Nissan Rogue starting with the 2021 model year—but only on the two highest trims. I’ll show you which ones in just a bit.

Before 2021, the Rogue already offered Apple CarPlay, but only with a wired connection. Starting in 2018, it became standard across most trims. It wasn’t until 2021 that wireless CarPlay was introduced, depending on the trim level.

If your Rogue is older than 2018, Apple CarPlay wasn’t available from the factory. But don’t worry—there are aftermarket options that can add both wired and wireless CarPlay to your vehicle. I’ll cover those shortly.

Which Rogue Trims Have Wireless CarPlay?

As mentioned earlier, wireless Apple CarPlay is available on the Nissan Rogue starting with the 2021 model year.

For the 2026 model year, wireless CarPlay is standard on the Platinum trim. If you are looking at 2021-2025 models, it was available on both SL and Platinum trims.

Already own a Rogue without wireless CarPlay? No problem. You can still upgrade your setup for a more convenient experience.

How to Upgrade to Wireless CarPlay

If your Rogue didn’t come with wireless Apple CarPlay, you’ve still got options.

For 2018–2026 Rogue models (Platinum), Apple CarPlay is built-in—but it’s wired. To make it wireless, you can use a plug-and-play adapter that adds wireless capability without changing your factory setup.

If your Rogue is older than 2018, it doesn’t have CarPlay at all. In that case, you’ll need to upgrade the stereo system to get the feature.

Let’s break it down:

2018 or Newer Nissan Rogue

These models come with wired Apple CarPlay. To go wireless, just add an adapter.

Benefits of using an adapter:

No need to plug in your iPhone

Your phone can stay in your pocket or bag

No more plugging and unplugging every time you drive

Things to keep in mind:

There might be a slight delay when connecting

Performance depends on the adapter’s quality—choose a trusted brand

You’ll need to spend a bit to buy the adapter

2007 – 2017 Nissan Rogue

If you drive a Rogue from 2017 or earlier, things are a bit trickier. These models don’t have Apple CarPlay at all, so you’ll need a full stereo upgrade.

Installing an aftermarket stereo with built-in wireless CarPlay is the way to go.

The upside? You’ll get access to newer tech and features. The downside? It’s more expensive than using an adapter.

Before upgrading, make sure the new stereo is compatible with your Rogue’s model and year.

How to Use Wireless Apple CarPlay

Here’s a step-by-step guide to connecting Apple CarPlay wirelessly in your Nissan Rogue:

Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone (Settings > Bluetooth).

Open Bluetooth settings on your car’s infotainment screen and select “Add New Device.”

Please select your car when it appears on your iPhone’s Bluetooth list.

Confirm the pairing code shown on both screens.

Tap Pair on your iPhone and allow CarPlay access.

Tap Yes on your car’s screen to start using Apple CarPlay.

Once paired, your iPhone will automatically connect to CarPlay whenever your car is on and your phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.

Final Thoughts: Boost Your Rogue’s Connectivity

Wireless Apple CarPlay is a feature worth having. It brings the best parts of your iPhone to your dashboard—navigation, music, messages, and more—all without touching your phone.

To get it in a Nissan Rogue, go for the SL or Platinum trim.

Already driving a Rogue without wireless CarPlay? You can upgrade with an adapter.

Got an older Rogue with no CarPlay at all? A stereo upgrade will get you there—just make sure it’s compatible.

At the end of the day, Apple CarPlay makes driving safer and smarter. And let’s be honest—using your phone while driving just isn’t worth it.

Got questions or want to share your experience with wireless CarPlay in your Rogue? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear from you.

If you’re looking for a family car, the Nissan Rogue might be on your radar. It’s widely recommended by reviewers and automotive blogs for its comfort and practicality.

However, one question might pop up in your mind: Does the Nissan Rogue offer a third row of seats?

In this article, I’ll explain whether the Nissan Rogue comes with a third-row seat. If it turns out the Rogue doesn’t meet your needs, I’ll also share some alternative options to consider.

3rd-Row Availability

For now, the Nissan Rogue is not available with a third-row seating configuration, at least not in the North American market. Older Rogue models produced between 2014 and 2017 were available with third-row seating for up to 7 people as an option.

In other parts of the world, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, the European Union, and several countries in Asia, there is currently a version of the Rogue that does offer three rows of seats. It is called the Nissan X-Trail.

The X-Trail is essentially the same vehicle as the Rogue but adapted for international markets. One of the key differences is that the X-Trail can come with three rows, allowing seating for up to seven passengers, which is not an option for the Rogue in North America.

Will Nissan bring the three-row Rogue to the North American market?

There’s no official word yet, but I personally hope Nissan considers offering a three-row option for the Rogue.

It wouldn’t be too hard to make it happen, especially since a version with three rows already exists outside of North America.

However, as of the 2026 model year, Nissan continues to position the Rogue strictly as a two-row SUV in the U.S. and Canada, leaving the three-row duties to the recently redesigned Pathfinder.

These days, if you want three rows in a Rogue, your best bet is to buy a used model or consider a different Nissan vehicle. I’ll go over some of those other options later in this article.

Pros and Cons

A third-row bench in your Nissan Rogue might sound like a great idea, but it comes with a few drawbacks you should consider.

The biggest advantage, of course, is that you can seat more passengers. However, because the Rogue is a compact SUV, the third row is really only suitable for smaller passengers, like kids.

Adding a third row also significantly reduces the available cargo space, which can be a downside if you regularly haul gear or luggage.

Some users on Reddit who own a three-row Rogue say they rarely use the extra seats because they’re cramped and uncomfortable for adults.

Another thing to keep in mind: the three-row version of the Rogue usually doesn’t come with a spare tire. That space is taken up by the extra row of seats, which might be a concern if you do a lot of driving.

Unless you truly need those extra seats for young kids, it might not be worth buying an older Rogue model just for the third-row option.

Aftermarket Option

If you currently own a Nissan Rogue and are thinking about adding a custom third-row seat, it’s best to reconsider.

While it is technically possible to install an aftermarket third-row bench, I strongly advise against it. This used to be a common modification for 2-row SUVs, but it’s no longer allowed.

On April 21, 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a press release specifically prohibiting the use of aftermarket add-on benches.

These seats aren’t certified under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, making them unsafe—especially for children, who are often the ones placed in these seats.

Frankly, the safety risks outweigh any added convenience.

Here are a few important reasons why you should avoid installing an aftermarket third-row bench:

The seat may not be securely attached to the vehicle.

The seatbelts are not tested or certified for safety.

The vehicle hasn’t undergone crash testing with an added rear bench, which compromises overall safety.

Beyond the safety concerns, installing an aftermarket bench can also damage your car’s interior. Since the Nissan Rogue wasn’t designed to support a third-row seat, there’s no dedicated space or mounting points—making any installation risky and potentially harmful to the vehicle’s structure.

Alternatives to Consider

As I mentioned earlier, buying an older Nissan Rogue just for the extra seats might not be the best idea.

If what you really need is a vehicle that can comfortably carry 7 to 9 passengers, then the Rogue simply won’t cut it. In that case, you’ll want to consider other Nissan models that are actually designed with third-row seating in mind.

Here are a couple of great options:

Nissan Pathfinder

Via Nissanusa

In terms of size, the Nissan Pathfinder is slightly larger than the Rogue and sits just below the Armada. It strikes a nice middle ground in Nissan’s SUV lineup.

The Pathfinder is a midsize SUV that comes standard with three rows of seats, making it a great choice for those who need to carry up to eight passengers.

Despite its larger size, it’s still comfortable and easy to drive around the city, while also being reliable for weekend adventures. Plus, it’s available with 4WD for added versatility.

That said, the third row in the Pathfinder can feel cramped for adults, so it’s best suited for children. And like most three-row SUVs, adding that extra row does reduce cargo space. In many cases, you’ll probably end up folding the third row down to use the space for storage.

While the Pathfinder offers more seats, it won’t match the Rogue’s fuel efficiency. If gas mileage is your priority, see how the Rogue’s Eco Mode helps it lead the class.

Some of the Nissan Pathfinder’s top competitors include the Kia Telluride, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.

Nissan Armada

Via Nissanusa

The Nissan Armada is a full-size SUV, which means it comes with a large body and generous interior dimensions.

One major advantage of this size is the spacious third-row seating — even adults can sit comfortably back there. Plus, the cargo space remains impressive, even with all three rows in use.

However, the Armada’s size can also be a drawback. Maneuvering it in tight city streets or small parking lots can be challenging for some drivers.

Another consideration is fuel economy. The Armada comes with a powerful engine, but that power comes at the cost of lower fuel efficiency compared to smaller SUVs.

If you need a vehicle with three rows, don’t mind the larger size, and want something rugged and ready for all types of terrain, the Nissan Armada with available four-wheel drive might be a solid choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, currently the Nissan Armada and Nissan Pathfinder are the only two Nissan models that offer seating for seven passengers. However, you can still find 7-seater configurations in used Rogue models from 2014-2017.

The Bottom Line

The Nissan Rogue is a fantastic compact SUV and a solid choice for families. Unfortunately, it is not available with a third-row seat. If accommodation for up to seven passengers is what you’re looking for, the Nissan Rogue might not be the right fit.

It’s true that Nissan offered a three-row bench option on older Rogue models, but buying one second-hand just for the extra seat may not be the wisest decision.

You can consider other Nissan models that come with a third-row seat. While they are certainly more expensive than the Nissan Rogue, the added space for family members can be well worth it.

My dad just bought a new Nissan Rogue, and he’s thrilled about his new SUV.

But there was one thing he was unsure about. He wanted to know if his Nissan Rogue came with a remote start feature. So he came to me with the question.

If you’re wondering the same thing, this article is here to help.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Nissan Rogue remote start feature. I’ll cover which models have it, how to use it, and what your options are if your Rogue does not include it.

Let’s dive in!

Compatible Models

Well, not every Nissan Rogue comes with the remote engine start feature. It depends on the model year and trim level.

I’ll break it down so you’ll know exactly which versions of the Rogue include this feature and which ones do not.

2024-2026 Nissan Rogue

The 2024, 2025, and 2026 Nissan Rogue models come with a remote engine start feature on almost all trim levels, except for the base model.

Nissan has also made it even more convenient by including this feature in the NissanConnect service, which lets you start your vehicle right from your smartphone.

Nissan Rogue S (Not Available)

Nissan Rogue SV (Via Key fob & Smartphone)

Nissan Rogue SL (Via Key fob & Smartphone)*

Nissan Rogue Dark Armor (Via Key fob & Smartphone)

Nissan Rogue Platinum (Via Key fob & Smartphone)

Nissan Rogue Rock Creek (Via Key fob & Smartphone)

*SL available on 2024-2025 models only

As you can see in the chart above, most of the latest Nissan Rogue models come with a remote engine start feature. What’s even better is that you can control it using your smartphone.

To do that, you’ll need to download a dedicated app, and an additional subscription fee is required. We’ll cover how it works and what it costs a bit later in the article.

2017-2023 Nissan Rogue

If you drive an older Nissan Rogue from the 2017 to 2023 model years, the remote start feature is available on several trim levels.

That said, it can be a bit tricky to confirm exactly which trims have it. From what I’ve found, the SL and Platinum trims, the two highest options, come with remote engine start.

The easiest way to check if your Rogue has this feature is by looking at the key fob. If it’s a keyless fob with buttons only and no metal key to insert, there’s a good chance your vehicle is equipped with remote start.

How to Remote Start Your Nissan Rogue

Using The Key Fob

Now that you’ve confirmed your model is compatible, the next step is learning how to use the remote start feature on your Nissan Rogue.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

Press the LOCK button on your key fob to lock the doors.

Make sure you’re aiming the key fob at the vehicle.

Press and hold the remote start button for about 5 seconds. The engine should start, and you’ll see the turn signals flash and the taillights turn on.

The engine will run for 10 minutes before shutting off automatically. If you want to restart it, just repeat the steps above.

A Few Things to Know About Using Remote Start on the Nissan Rogue

The remote engine start works from up to 197 feet (60 meters) away from the vehicle.

When the engine starts remotely, the front parking lights will turn on and stay on while the engine is running.

The doors will automatically lock. On some models, the air conditioning may also turn on.

If you use the remote start while the engine is already running, an extra 10 minutes will be added right away. For example, if the engine has been running for 3 minutes and you activate remote start again, it will keep running for a total of 13 minutes.

Using Your Smartphone

If you prefer to use the Nissan app to remotely start your Rogue, you’ll need an active subscription or trial to the NissanConnect Premium packages.

Open the app on your smartphone and sign in using your email address.

Once added, you’ll see several options, including Engine.

Tap the Engine button. A confirmation message will appear. Press Yes, and your Nissan Rogue will start the engine remotely.

The MyNISSAN app offers more than just remote engine start. You can also use it to lock and unlock the doors, control the lights, sound the horn, manage the alarm, track your vehicle’s location, and more.

As mentioned earlier, you’ll need an active subscription to use the NissanConnect Premium service. The good news is that Nissan offers it free for the first 3 years on the latest Rogue models.

After the trial period ends, you’ll need to pay a subscription fee of around $13 per month to keep using NissanConnect Premium features, including remote engine start.

Remote Start Not Working on Your Nissan Rogue? Let’s Fix It

If the remote engine start doesn’t work, it doesn’t always mean something is wrong. Sometimes, certain conditions just haven’t been met.

Here are a few things to check before trying again:

The hood isn’t fully closed.

The hazard lights are on.

The engine is already running.

One or more doors aren’t securely closed.

The liftgate is open or not properly closed.

The anti-theft alarm is triggered.

The remote start was already used once without the vehicle being driven — to use it again, the car must be driven at least 4 MPH (7 km/h) first.

The gear shift is not in (P) park position.

If all the conditions above are met and the remote engine start still doesn’t work, there may be an issue. Here are some common reasons:

Low key fob battery – If the battery in your key fob is weak or dead, some features like remote start may stop working. Try replacing it with a fresh battery.

Second key fob is inside the vehicle – If the second key fob is inside the car, it may interfere with the remote start function.

Key system malfunction – If there’s a problem with the key system, you’ll usually see a warning message on the vehicle information display, and remote start may be disabled.

Aftermarket Options

If you’re driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue or older, you won’t have access to the remote engine start feature by default.

However, the good news is that you can upgrade by installing an aftermarket remote start module. This allows you to enjoy the convenience of remote engine start, even on older Rogue models.

Before making a decision, here are a few important things to consider.

Cost

The cost of remote engine start parts for the Nissan Rogue typically ranges from $150 to $250, not including installation.

I strongly recommend choosing a reputable brand, even if it comes at a slightly higher price. A well-known brand usually means better reliability and customer support.

Also, make sure the product you choose comes with at least a 1-year warranty for added peace of mind.

Installation

Once you’ve found a quality remote start kit, it’s important to ensure it’s installed properly for safety reasons.

Because the installation involves several electrical components, safety should be your top priority. I recommend having a skilled professional handle the installation to avoid potential issues.

If you’re experienced with this kind of work, many kits come with clear installation guides, and some even include video tutorials to walk you through the process.

However, if you’re not fully confident, paying a professional to do the job is a smart and worthwhile investment.

Wrapping Up

Remote engine start is one of the most useful features in the Nissan Rogue. It lets you start your vehicle remotely without even getting inside.

This feature is especially handy in the winter when it’s freezing outside. Instead of going out to warm up your car, you can start it from the comfort of your home. On some models, the cabin will even begin to heat automatically to a comfortable temperature.

So by the time you get in, the car’s already warm and ready to go. No more shivering while waiting for the heater to kick in.

If you have any questions about the remote start feature on your Nissan Rogue, or if you’d like to share your experience, feel free to drop a comment. I’d love to hear from you!
